Saint Vincent de Paul Society at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, Received $7000 Grant from Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice to Support Baby Center

The Deacon Dominick Cassadone Chapter of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, hosted at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, was the recent recipient of a $7000 grant from Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York as part of the non-profit organization’s annual Campaign for Charity and Justice. The funds will be used to support the Society’s Baby Center at the former Sacred Heart School at 24 South Robinson Avenue, Newburgh.

The Baby Center provides families in need in the City of Newburgh with basic necessities for young children. These include diapers, wipes, hygiene items, clothes, and other baby items like strollers and bassinets, when they are available. They also provide layettes to expectant mothers.

The grant was accepted by Sue Conner, Society Chapter President, and Norma Leggett, Vice President. “This grant will positively impact our efforts in so many ways,” said Mrs. Conner. “No longer will we have to turn away families because we have run out of the items they need. Our hearts break when we know a mother has walked to our center with a baby in tow only to find out our supplies are depleted. With this grant we will even be able to increase the number of diapers a family can receive each week,” added Conner.

The Baby Center is open each Tuesday from 9 am to 12 pm at the former Sacred Heart School in Newburgh.

The Campaign for Charity and Justice is an initiative to revitalize and increase Catholic Charities support for the charitable and justice work of parishes and community groups. Through grants it supports projects that meet local needs, especially those that assist poor and vulnerable neighbors. Grants are made in the five primary mission areas of Catholic Charities: protecting and nurturing youth; feeding the hungry and sheltering the homeless; strengthening families and resolving crises; supporting the physically and emotionally challenged; and welcoming and integrating immigrants and refugees.

The parish of St. Mary’s Church in Obernburg, Sullivan County, also received a grant to support parish social outreach to isolated parishioners.

The grant application for the Campaign for Charity and Justice is available on the Catholic Charities website at www.catholiccharitiesny.org. The deadline to apply is January 18, 2019.

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frédéric Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
