International Overdose Awareness Day Recognition Event To be Hosted at Catholic Charities’ Monticello Office

Event Will Include Narcan Training, Prevention Information

MONTICELLO – In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster will host an awareness event, coordinated by the agency’s Prevention Department, on Friday, August 31. The Overdose Awareness Day activities will take place at Catholic Charities’ Monticello location at 396 Broadway, from 1 to 3 pm.

The event will include a FREE Narcan training, and all attendees will be eligible to receive a complimentary Narcan Kit upon completion of the training. Narcan is a safe and easy to use medication that will reverse the affect of an opioid overdose.

International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized globally and provides an opportunity for residents to reflect on practical ways to prevent overdose within their communities. “Overdose is preventable, and no community is immune,” said Dr. Dean Scher, CEO, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster.  “Sadly, some of us have already experienced the results of overdose first-hand with a friend or loved one. It’s time to reverse the trend, this is not an invisible issue. We must erase the stigma and work together to combat this threat to our public health,” encouraged Dr. Scher.

Knowing the facts about drugs and having the knowledge and skills to react appropriately when someone does overdose can save lives. Each year, thousands around the world lose their lives to overdose. Some are fortunate enough to survive, but suffer permanent injury, with devastating impact on their families and friends. This awareness event will help increase understanding around how overdose affects individuals, families, and communities and the proactive steps that can be taken to make a difference.

Registration is required for the Overdose Awareness Day Recognition event. To register or for more information, please call: 845-794-8080, ext. 170 or ext. 117. Refreshments will be served.
